According to Hawaii’s annual Uniform Crime Report, Crime in Hawaii, Maui County recorded a 0.2% decline in crime rate as per 2017 data. Total index crimes decreased to 6,175 from 6,191 in the previous year. A breakdown of the data revealed property crime to be the most popular crime subset, accounting for 92% of the total reported crimes. Larceny-theft was the overall most recurring crime with over 4,000 reported incidents while burglary and motor-vehicle theft followed behind with 906 and 807 reported incidents respectively. Aggravated assault was recorded to the most popular of all the violent crimes but the fourth most recurring offense with 282 reported incidents in the year. While rape and robbery were the 5th and 7th most reported crimes with 150 and 67 incidents each, arson held steady at number 6 on the scale with 109 reported incidents.
Criminal Records
The Maui County Police Department is tasked with providing law enforcement functions and providing related support services to county residents; this includes collating and issuing criminal records as well as monitoring criminal activity throughout the county. At the state level, the Hawaii Criminal Justice Center maintains the central repository of criminal history information and as such processes requests for criminal records and background checks. Thus, requests for background checks on Maui county residents can be processed at county and state levels.
How to Get Criminal Records and Police Reports
The Records and Identification Section of the Maui County Police Department processes requests for name-based and fingerprint-based background checks on county residents, as well as provides copies of incident and police reports of events that occurred within county limits.
Interested persons may request these by visiting the Police Department and querying the concerned unit.
Requests for criminal records and background checks will require the requesting party to provide information regarding the subject - specifically the subjects name, date of birth and gender or a fingerprint card (if requesting a fingerprint-based check). Requestors will also be required to provide a government-issued ID as well as any applicable fees charged for the service.
Similarly, requests for police and incident reports require requesters to provide information regarding the event/incident including the names of the persons involved the date and place of the occurrence and a brief description of the event if necessary. Alternatively, the requesting party may download and complete a Police Request Form. Requestors requiring a copy of the report will likely be charged a standard copy fee of $0.25 per page.

On the other hand, requests for criminal records are also processed by the Hawaii Criminal Justice Center. The center provides statewide records of the subject's criminal activity, including arrest information, felony, and misdemeanor charges as well as their conviction history information. Interested persons may access these records by self-serving with Hawaii's Adult Criminal Information (eCrim) web application. Requestors may view the required information based on the search criteria they provide such as the name of the subject, the subject's social security number, gender, and/or date of birth. The requesting party will be charged a $5 fee per unique search while eCrime reports cost $10.
How to Find Sex Offender Information
Information regarding sex offenders resident in Maui County is published on the Covered Offender Search application managed by the Hawaii Criminal Justice Center. Interested persons may search for registered offenders living within county limits by furnishing the search tool with criteria such as the offender's first, middle or last name, city, zip code or a specific mile radius from the location of the requestor. The application also provides information regarding offender compliance and incarceration status as well as specific details of their past offenses.

Where and How to Get Court Records
Records of court cases heard by Maui County courts are managed by the court clerks of the respective courts. These offices provide copies of non-confidential court records to county residents upon request. The State of Hawaii operates a statewide recording office that maintains records of all documents pertaining to land and real property throughout the state. Vital Records
Maui County's vital records are managed by the Vital Records office of the Hawaii State Department of Health. Statewide requests for death, marriage, divorce, and birth records are processed by the office, which only makes these records available to eligible persons in compliance with state laws.
Where and How to Get Divorce Records
Requests for divorce records are processed by the vital records office of the Hawaii State Department of health. In compliance with state laws, divorce certificates are exclusively issued to persons who have a direct and tangible interest in the record including the named registrants, the parents and direct relatives of the divorcees as well as legally authorized persons. Where and How to Get Marriage Records, Birth Records and Death Records
The vital records office of the State Department of Health maintains and issues copies of marriage, birth and death records. In compliance with state laws, these records can only be issued to the following persons
- The registrant or persons named on the record
- the registrant’s parents, spouse, descendant, and persons with whom they have a common ancestor with the registrant
- a legal guardian or representative of the registrant;
- Persons who have a court order authorizing them to access the record
- Persons who can establish a direct interest in the record.
Requests for these records can be made by completing a Hawaii Request for Birth Record, Hawaii Request for Marriage Record, or Hawaii Request for Death Record. Completed forms should then be accompanied by the fees stated on the forms as well as a colored copy of the requester's ID and submitted to:

In addition to government agencies, county public records may also be obtained from third-party websites. These non-government platforms come with intuitive tools that allow for expansive searches. Record seekers may either opt to use these tools to search for a specific record or multiple records. Users are able to search third-party websites remotely for multiple records at a time with just the name of the record subject and their last known location, including the city, county, or state.
